I’ve found a fantastic publishing contest for anyone who has ever dreamt of writing a children’s book. Southwest Human Development, a lovely nonprofit based in Arizona that focuses on early childhood development, is holding its second annual First Edition Children’s Book Contest. Submissions are due before September 30, and the winner will receive a publishing contract, a $1000 advance, 8% royalties on book sales, and financial support for marketing and promotion.
For a publishing contest, this is an extraordinary set of prizes, so if you write stories for children, this is the perfect opportunity for you. More information can be found on the group’s website at http://www.firsteditionproject.com/childrens-book-contest.html.
Southwest Human Development donates 200,000 books annually to Arizona’s children and its families, so even if you aren’t planning on participating in this contest, I encourage you to check out their website and learn more about what they do.
Much luck and love to anyone who enters!

I’ve only ever cash prizes, so that is a crazy generous giveaway.
No idea how to write children’s lit though.

It is a wonderful contest! I think the group is really trying to encourage the creation of better children’s literature.
I’ll admit that writing children’s stories is a bit out of my wheelhouse as well, but someone more prepared than I am may want to compete!

Thanks to Kristen Wardowski for this information 😀

I find that the entry fee is steep for a writing competition. Sure, it’s a good organization to support but that would probably deter many good authors from entering,

That is a good point. I have found that many contests have begun increasing their entry fees. I understand why they do it, but it definitely constricts who will apply.
