It is a season for giving, and as many of you know, I like to give to those who need it the most whenever I can. Luckily, WorldBuilders has some wonderful opportunities to help others while strengthening the book community.
WorldBuilders is a collective of authors, publishers, and book lovers that donates to various nonprofits. The group gives to three different charities, Heifer International, Mercy Corps, and First Book, and there are several ways that individuals can give through WorldBuilders.
The first is the Lottery. By giving to Heifer International, a person is automatically entered into a lottery for book related swag. Current items in the lottery include a necklace based on Tolkien’s Smaug, a bracelet based on the Dresden series, and thousands of books, many of which include notes from their authors. Second, an individual can participate in auctions the proceeds of which go to the above charities. These auctions only occur for 9 weeks out of the year and allow people to bid on book-related items. We are currently in the midst of auction season, so now is a great time to see what items are available. If you like more certainty from your gifts, however, you can purchase items directly from the WorldBuilders’s store. It contains books, clothing, games, art, and other literary treasures.
All of the items that people receive through the lottery and auction have been donated by publishers or authors, so WorldBuilders doesn’t have to spend precious resources acquiring them.
I know that many people have already chosen their charities for the year, but if you are still looking for a place to give, WorldBuilders is a wonderful opportunity. (I’ve done some investigating into their affiliated nonprofits, and they seem like very reputable ones that advocate for economic self-reliance, environmental stewardship, and literacy.) If you have given to WorldBuilders or a similar group before, let me know about your experience. I would love to hear how it went.
