When I worked in a college library, I had to periodically go around and wake people from where they had fallen asleep in the book stacks, on tables, or in quiet corners. I didn’t wake them to be cruel but because the library had to close sometime, and they couldn’t spend the night even if they did have an important paper due the next day.
A hotel in Japan has figured out a way to bring people back to those halcyon days of sleeping on textbooks. In both Tokyo and Kyoto, patrons can stay at Book and Bed where they can dream in beds surrounded by bookcases and curl up with a book late into the night. And they can do all of that without an exhausted library staff member asking them to move. (Though I imagine the lack of librarians may take away from the experience somewhat. 😉 ).
Though Book and Bed certainly isn’t as fancy (or expensive) as the Library Hotel in New York, it looks like a fun place to visit. I have family in Japan, and the next time I go to see them I may have to pop in this place and explore it. I’ll report back if I do!
Great idea! 😀

Isn’t it fabulous? It makes me want to play hooky from work and curl up with a book.

Very interesting! Such libraries will be dream homes for many college and grad students! Thanks for the post.

I certainly would have appreciated it when I was still in school!

Definitely. Now I just need to figure out how to bring the concept to the US…

Just love “Sleeping in the Stacks”…I confess I now read on my kindle but still adore libraries.

I understand that. I certainly read a lot of ebooks myself these days, but there is something about libraries and physical bookshelves that I will always love.

Man! Japan is where it’s at! They have all these cool cafes and cool hotels! It makes me really jealous (and makes me wish I’d stayed longer. :p) There’s so much to explore and I totally wish I’d known about the Book Hotels when I was in Japan. Jealous@

Where did you go in Japan? I’ve only ever really done much in Hokkaido. (Which always seems to disappoint people.)
LikeLiked by 1 person
What?! I’ve heard Hokkaido is gorgeous, but I didn’t get the chance to go. I stayed in middle Japan around Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima. Not enough money or time in the world to see it all.

Time and money are always trouble. Hokkaido was lovely, but I’m jealous of your sojourn to Kyoto! So many great old buildings…

Would be a dream hotel for me. Do let us know if you get there.

Will do! I hope to go sooner rather than later. It has been…a very long time since I’ve seen the family member who lives there, and I should really try to see her more.

This is ideal for all book lovers and looks so cosy. Are you going to Japan soon? No pressure…😀😀 off to have a look at the library hotel in New York. Thanks for sharing and just love this.

Hopefully I’ll get over there in the next year or so! Travel prices always paralyze me, but I need to bite the bullet and purchase airplane tickets eventually.

I absolutely want one of those! The idea is so cool. I didn’t know such places exist. I may even just try to build one.

I think building one is a great idea! I was trying to figure out how to fit one into my apartment, but the logistics would be…complicated.

OMG1 I love it. I would love to sleep among books. I’ll be having dreams like I pop up in some book and play with the main character.

Those dreams are the best! I think a lot of us would love to visit some of our favorite fictional places and people.

I had to do the same at the library I worked at. Very interesting idea

There is nothing quite like having to poke people awake, is there? I always felt like I was approaching sleeping bears.

This place is in my neighborhood in Tokyo (Ikebukuro). It’s getting more creative here and interesting all the time. But really I like this area because it’s not filled by people following the latest trends. Not yet!

Oh, I’m jealous that it is near where you are! It sounds like a wonderful experience living in that area. Being in places where ideas flourish always is.

That looks so cool. I do wonder whether the rooms are assigned or you just pick a nook to curl up in – as neat as that sounds I don’t think I’d be able to sleep with strangers only a curtain away (always a problem in hostels).

I understand what you mean. I’m a bit of an anxious person myself, so while these nooks look like comfy places to hang out, I’m not sure I could fully relax in them.

This looks fantastic! I always subscribed to the theory that if you fell asleep on a textbook the information would just seep in by osmosis…

I would have learned so much more if brains worked that way. (Maybe if I click my heels and believe, they will.)

So cool…That’s a really novel approach to the “you don’t have to go home, but you can’t sleep here” dilemma.

It is, isn’t it? Now I just have to convince the company to start a few hotels in places near me…

I hope you get a chance to let us know what it’s like! 😀 It sounds like a great idea and I love the photos of the sleeping area…only problem is I reckon I’d get carried away reading and not sleep!😀

Ha! I have that problem at home. I can only imagine that it would be exponentially worse when surrounded by stacks of books.
