As I mentioned last week, I stumbled into an interesting opportunity. It turns out that I can share more about that now.
I recently accepted a position as a contributing author for Book Riot. Book Riot is an awesome online media site that “is dedicated to the idea that writing about books and reading should be just as diverse as books and readers are.” I’m thrilled that I will have the chance to work with such a socially conscious community of book lovers.
Though I can’t imagine abandoning my corner of the publishing industry, this is a wonderful side gig and exciting experience. At this point, I’m not entirely sure how my new role will affect this blog. I imagine that I will periodically share my Book Riot articles here, but for the most part, you shouldn’t notice any changes.
If you want to check out my first articles for Book Riot, click on the linked images below!
This is awesome. You have the most polished and well written prose I’ve seen on WordPress. Super glad you are getting a wider audience.

Very exciting, Kristen! I read both articles and enjoyed them immensely.
Highlighter in library books? Cartoons? Really??
And hooray for environmental awakening via literature! Thank you for sharing your childhood experience.

Thank you, Tracy! And the highlighting really was horrifying to see. Since I was working in a college library at the time, it wasn’t too surprising though. Students can be very…creative with books.

Congratulations, Kristen – I have occasionally come across the odd pencilled note – but HIGHLIGHTERS? Really?? Idiots! You are nicer than I am – what gives ANYONE the right to scribble and mark up a book that has to be read by others? Particularly in this day and age when if it’s a particular poem or passage, you can copy up to 10 pages in a book and mark them up to your heart’s content without infringing any copyright rules at all, so long as it is for your own use…

Thanks, Sarah! And honestly, the highlighted pages were pretty horrifying. At some point you just have to laugh at though or else you end up scowling at all of the patrons. (Which was…tempting on occasion.)

Thank you, Christina! The way some people write in library books is so strange to me, but it taught me a lot about how people read.

I agree with those feelings of strangeness. But I know that’s how some people close read a text and eventually (reluctantly) I started doing it too (but with books I owned). It’s also especially beneficial for teachers (but they use their own copies).

Very true! My mom was a teacher and I know that her editions of books were always thoroughly annotated.

Maybe I’m strange but I don’t think I’ve ever written in a book, much less a library book.

Thank you! And I don’t find it strange at all that you don’t annotate your books. Some folks do; some folks don’t. (…Though I definitely could have down without them writing in library books. Ah, well.)
